cigány vagyok. Nem gyöttek rá. Nem tudták
elképzelni. Sok ember gondol kozik, hogy na,
mostan ô bevallja, hogy cigány, én meg azt
mondom: ne vallja be. Ne vallja be, mindig elôre
jut, tagadja el, ha el tudja tagadni. Rá se gondoltak
volna, hogy nem magyar vagyok. Úgyhogy
egyátalán, másképp nem is kezeltek, mint magyart.
(…)
Mit mondjak, hát én élek. Most élem az éle -
temet, kapom a kevés nyugdíjamat, megvan
annyi, hogy megélünk. Normális életet élünk.
Annyi van, amit megeszünk. Megvan minden,
was clever and they did not know that I was a
Rom, and I denied it. I denied it wherever I
was. Sometimes, at work, where they did not
know that I was Rom, they said the word
‘Gypsy’ and I would get pissed off. Because they
were hundred times filthier than the Roma and
abused the Roma. I’d always tell them, Roma
were better than you. ’Cos they did not know
that I was Rom. They had never found out.
They did not think of it. Many people are
thinking, whether or not they should tell that
they are Roma; well, I say: don’t. Don’t tell, and
you can advance; deny it, when you can. They
had never thought that I was not Hungarian.
Therefore they did not treat me differently at
all.
What can I say? I am alive. I live my life, get my
slight pension, I earn enough to live on. We live
a normal life. We eat what we have. We have
everything that we want. I have a
little place in Zala, and a house up there. We
used to live there but my wife had become
diabetic and we did not dare to live there,
because when she got sick we could not take
her down to the doctors; so we moved. Since
then we have lived here. Up there we have a
house with every modern comfort. I am selling
it, but nobody wants it. I advertise it a lot, but
nobody wants it.
