Attaching and Removing the Bolus CordWhen the PCA therapy is used, patient bolus dosing can be programmed. To facilitate ease ofpatient self-dosing, the patient can use the Bolus key or the Remote Bolus Access Cord. The cordis five feet long and has a patient access button at the top of the remote cord. The four-pinadapter plugs into the four-hole port on the left side of the pump (see Figure 1.14 below). Thisport may be covered with a plastic plug. If so, remove the plug to access the port. To correctlyconnect the bolus cord, align the red dot and the connector’s keyed notch with the red dot andnotch in the port on the left side of the pump. When the cord is plugged into the pump it islocked in place by the locking sleeve. To remove the cord, pull back on the soft, green lockingsleeve and disengage the cord from the pump by pulling it straight out of the access port.Because bolus dosing is applicable only in PCA therapy, if the cord is left in place and the buttonis pushed while any other therapy is infusing, an alert message will appear on the display screenstating: “Not in PCA No Bolus Allowed.”Bolus/DataPort on Leftside of PumpRemote bolusaccess portLocking SleeveFour-pronged adapterplugs into access port onleft side of pump asshown. To remove bolus cord, pull back on lockingsleeve and pull cord straight out of accessport.Figure 1.14 Attaching and removing the remote Bolus Cord22
