LANDOWNERSHIP IN EUROPEAN RUSSIAThe Landed Property Statistics for 1905, published bythe Central Statistical Committee in 1907, enables us <strong>to</strong>ascertain precisely the comparative size <strong>of</strong> the peasantand landlord holdings in the fifty gubernias in EuropeanRussia. First <strong>of</strong> all we will give the general data. The wholeterri<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> European Russia (50 gubernias) is given (seecensus <strong>of</strong> January 28, 1897) as 4,230,500 square versts,i.e., 440,800,000 dessiatins. The landed property statisticsfor 1905 register a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 395,200,000 dessiatins underthe following three main headings:MilliondessiatinsA. Privately owned land 101.7B. Allotment land 97 <strong>13</strong>8.8C. Land owned by state, church, andvarious institutions 154.7Total land in European Russia 395.2<strong>From</strong> these general figures it is necessary <strong>to</strong> deduct,first <strong>of</strong> all, state lands situated in the far north and consistingpartly <strong>of</strong> tundra and partly <strong>of</strong> such forest land as cannotbe expected <strong>to</strong> be used for agriculture in the near future.There are 107,900,000 dessiatins <strong>of</strong> such land in the “north-
