S., Agrarian Programmes, Novy Mir Publishers, p. 7.)Comment is superfluous.It is interesting <strong>to</strong> note that in the First Duma Denmarkwas put forward as a trump card by the liberal Herzenstein,<strong>to</strong> which the Right deputies (in both Dumas) re<strong>to</strong>rted:in Denmark there is peasant ownership. We need nationalisationin our country in order <strong>to</strong> create freedom for theold farms <strong>to</strong> reorganise “on Danish lines” on the “unfenced”land. As for converting tenancy in<strong>to</strong> ownership, there willbe no obstacle <strong>to</strong> that if the peasants themselves demandit, in such a matter the entire bourgeoisie and the bureaucracywill always support the peasantry. What is more,under nationalisation the development <strong>of</strong> capitalism (adevelopment “on Danish lines”) will be more rapid as a consequence<strong>of</strong> the abolition <strong>of</strong> private ownership <strong>of</strong> land.6. THE TRUDOVIK PEASANTS (NARODNIKS)The Trudovik peasants and the Socialist-Revolutionarypeasants do not differ essentially from the non-party peasants.A comparison <strong>of</strong> their speeches clearly reveals thesame needs, the same demands, and the same outlook. Theparty peasants are merely more politically conscious, theyexpress themselves more clearly, and grasp more fully theconnection between the different aspects <strong>of</strong> the question.The best speech <strong>of</strong> all, perhaps, was that <strong>of</strong> the peasantKiselyov, a Trudovik, at the 26th session <strong>of</strong> the Second Duma(April 12, 1907). In contrast <strong>to</strong> the “state point <strong>of</strong> view”<strong>of</strong> the liberal petty bureaucrat, he emphasised the factthat “our government’s entire domestic policy, which isactually controlled by the landlords, is directed <strong>to</strong> keepingthe land in the possession <strong>of</strong> its present owners” (1943).The speaker showed that that was the reason why the peoplewere kept “in abysmal ignorance”, and then he wen<strong>to</strong>n <strong>to</strong> deal with the speech delivered by the Oc<strong>to</strong>brist, PrinceSvya<strong>to</strong>polk-Mirsky. “You have, <strong>of</strong> course, not forgottenthe horrible things he said: ‘Abandon all idea <strong>of</strong> increasingthe area <strong>of</strong> peasant landownership.
