1891: Kalakaua dies in San Francisco and his body is brought back to Hawai’i. His sister<br />

Lili’uokalani is proclaimed queen. Economic depression due to the McKinley Tariff Bill<br />

leads to renewed calls for annexation from the sugar growers.<br />

1893: Queen Lili’uokalani is deposed; a provisional government is established under<br />

Sanford B. Dole.<br />

1894: The Republic of Hawaii is established. Sanford B. Dole becomes president of the<br />

republic.<br />

1895: Robert Wilcox fails in his attempt to lead a revolt to restore the monarchy.<br />

Lili’uokalani abdicates the throne and is forced to pledge allegiance to the republic.<br />

1898: Spain declares war against the United States. Troops are temporarily stationed near<br />

Diamond Head. President McKinley signs a joint resolution of Congress that annexes<br />

Hawai’i to the United States.<br />

1900: A fire intended to purify Honolulu’s Chinatown of the epidemic of bubonic plague<br />

flames out of control and destroys 38 acres. Thousands lose their homes and businesses.<br />

President McKinley signs the Organic Act, and the Territory of Hawai’i is inaugurated.<br />

1907: Fort Shafter, headquarters for the army, becomes the first permanent military post<br />

in the territory. The College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (today the University of<br />

Hawai’i) begins with twelve faculty members and five students.<br />

1912: Duke Kahanamoku wins a gold medal in the 100-meter swim at the Olympic<br />

Games in Stockholm, Sweden.<br />

1913: The Library of Hawai’i, the first public library in Hawai’i, opens in downtown<br />

Honolulu.<br />

1917: Former Queen Lili’uokalani dies, and a state funeral is held.<br />

1919: Pearl Harbor drydock is formally dedicated.<br />

1920: At the urging of State Representative Prince Jonah Kalanianaole Kuhio, last titular<br />

prince of the monarchy, Congress establishes the Hawaiian Homes Commission which<br />

sets aside public lands for “people of Hawaiian blood to again get possession of land in<br />

Hawai’i.”<br />

1921: Reclamation of Waikiki swamplands begins.<br />

1922: Prince Kuhio dies at Waikiki. Washington Place, former home of Queen<br />

Lili’uokalani, opens as the official residence of Hawai’i’s governors.<br />
