Therefore 2-phenylphenol is used in food preservation because of its fungicidal and bactericidal activity. ● The substrate is fed continuously to the reactor (0.45 g · L –1 ·h –1 ), establishing an actual concentration of the educt below the toxic level. ● Catechols are readily soluble in the aqueous phase (435 g · L –1 ), which complicates extraction of the formed product. ● Dissolved 3-phenylcatechol readily polymerizes (product half-life at pH 7 and 37 °C is 10 h). ● The product is removed by continuous adsorption on the solid resin Amberlite TM XAD-4 (hydrophobic, polystyrene-based). ● The reaction mixture with the whole cells is continuously pumped through an external loop with a fluidized bed of the resin. Before circulating past the adsorbent all substrate is converted. Through the external loop 10 reactor volumes are circulated per hour. ● The growth rate of Escherichia coli is unaffected in the presence of XAD-4. EC 1.14.13.44 ● The product is liberated from the resin by acidic methanol elution, followed by recrystallisation from n-hexane. ● By this process a series of other catechol derivatives are produced. This is easily possible by just changing the substrate in the feed (repetitive use of biocatalysts). 230 OH Sigma Aldrich
