Chiroscience uses the hydrolase-catalyzed resolution of azlactones instead. ● Azlactones easily racemize and can be prepared by cyclodehydration of an N-acylated amino acid with acetic anhydride. ● Although the opening of the ring with water can also be achieved non-enzymatically, the reaction in presence of water is very unselective. An alcohol in a water-free system has to be used instead. ● Even if the process is formally described as a kinetic resolution it is ultimately a deracemization.
