5) Product application
● Pleuromutilin is an antibiotic from Pleurotus or Clitopilus basidiomycete strains, which kills
mainly Gram-positive bacteria and mycoplasms. A more active semi-synthetic analogue, tiamulin,
has been developed for treatment of animals and poultry and has been shown to bind
to a prokaryotic ribosome and inhibit protein synthesis.
● Modification of the 8-position of tiamulin is of interest as a means of preventing the metabolic
hydroxylation. The target analogue would maintain the biological activity and not be susceptible
to metabolic inactivation.
