3.8 Diols<br />

Diols can be prepared from diketones by reduction and epoxides by enzymatic hydrolysis.<br />

Mono-, di-, and tri-substituted diols can be obtained in this fashion [20]. Alternatively,<br />

they can be prepared by dioxygenation of double bonds.<br />

The dynamic resolution of 1,2-, 1,3-diols has been reported using lipase–Ru-catalysts<br />

[21].<br />
