from stricter behaviorism, <strong>Quine</strong>’s behaviorism reserves a role for<br />

introspection.<br />

As <strong>Quine</strong> remarks, one may or may not choose to be a behaviorist<br />

in psychology, but one has no choice but to be a behaviorist in linguistics.<br />

<strong>Quine</strong> believes one has no choice based on the empirical claim<br />

that people learn their language by observing the behavior of other<br />

people amid intersubjectively appreciable circumstances. The corollary<br />

to this empirical claim about language learning is the semantical<br />

claim that there is nothing to linguistic meaning that cannot be manifested<br />

in behavior. But if this were so, then ascriptions of intensional<br />

terms generally can sometimes extend vacuously beyond all the behavioral<br />

facts. This overextendedness can occur in both theoretical<br />

and practical contexts. And when theories of language learning, or<br />

of semantics, or of mind routinely incorporate such lapses of empiricist<br />

discipline, <strong>Quine</strong> considers them to be unscientific. Indeed, this<br />

is perhaps the central philosophical point of <strong>Quine</strong>’s right-minded<br />

behaviorism cum empiricism.<br />
