I do not believe in trifling in such matters, and advise forcing <strong>the</strong><br />

issue, and believe your <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> would sustain you in your action.<br />

Dec. 13. Statement.—The following provision is contained in <strong>the</strong><br />

by-laws <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> our Subordinate <strong>Lodge</strong>s: "When a member has<br />

received <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> $300.00 sick benefits he shall be entitled and<br />

receive only one dollar per week for any sickness which may occur<br />

<strong>the</strong>reafter."<br />

Question.—Is such provision legal under <strong>the</strong> minimum benefit law?<br />

Answer.—No.<br />

Dec. 14. Question.—May a Past <strong>Grand</strong> Patriarch use his jewel in<br />

lieu <strong>of</strong> regalia in Subordinate and Rebekah <strong>Lodge</strong>s as well as in <strong>the</strong><br />

Encampment branch?<br />

Answer.—Yes.<br />

Dec. 15. Question.—May a Past <strong>Grand</strong> Master use his jewel in<br />

lieu <strong>of</strong> regalia in Encampment and Rebekah <strong>Lodge</strong>s as well as in<br />

Subordinate <strong>Lodge</strong>s?<br />

Answer.—Yes. Journal 1911, pages 286, 288, 376, 403.<br />

Dec. 16. Statement.—At <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> a special feature <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong><br />

business, such as an <strong>of</strong>ficial visitation by <strong>Grand</strong> Officers or <strong>the</strong> con-<br />

'ferring <strong>of</strong> a degree, a <strong>Lodge</strong> takes a recess and retires from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong><br />

room to a banquet hall for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> partaking <strong>of</strong> a spread provided<br />

for <strong>the</strong> entertainment <strong>of</strong> guests and o<strong>the</strong>rs. At <strong>the</strong> conclusion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> banquet cigars are passed and members smoke during a program<br />

<strong>of</strong> speaking, etc. After <strong>the</strong> social hour members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong><br />

return to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> room, conclude <strong>the</strong> business <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evening and<br />

close <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> in regular form.<br />

Question.—Under such circumstances are <strong>the</strong> practices referred<br />

to unlawful?<br />

Answer.—No. Not in <strong>Lodge</strong> room.<br />

Dec. 17. Statement.—A <strong>Lodge</strong> has no room available for a spread<br />

or banquet except its <strong>Lodge</strong> room and, under circumstances as above<br />

related, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> takes a recess and <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs bring in tables and<br />

provide for <strong>the</strong> entertainment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir guests in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> room. Here,<br />

as above, members indulge in smoking during <strong>the</strong> supper and exercises<br />

forming a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social function.<br />

Question.—Is this unlawful?<br />

Answer.—Yes. Should be deferred under <strong>the</strong>se circumstances<br />

until <strong>Lodge</strong> finally closes.<br />

Dec. 18. Statement.—A <strong>Lodge</strong> meets to attend <strong>the</strong> funeral <strong>of</strong> a<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r. It is opened in regular form; <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs leave <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong><br />

room and, in carriages provided, go to <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> funeral; <strong>the</strong>n<br />

to <strong>the</strong> grave, performing <strong>the</strong> funeral ceremonies, after which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

return to <strong>the</strong> carriages and drive back to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lodge</strong> room and close <strong>the</strong>
