Taille et structure de la population en Afrique centraleLa sous-région constitue un ensemble homogène de par certainescaractéristiques démographiques. Ainsi, la structure de la populationest sensiblement la même dans tous les pays d’Afrique centrale, avecenviron 50% de la population parmi ceux en âge de travailler (15-64). La population croîtparmi ceux en âge de travailler.également à un rythme à peu près régulier dans les pays d’Afrique centrale(2,5% pour Sao Tomé et Principe ; 2,4% pour le Congo et la Guinéeéquatoriale ; 2,7% pour l’Angola ; environ 3% pour le Burundi ; laRépublique Démocratique du Congo et le Tchad). L’accroissement dela population s’effectue plus lentement au Cameroun et en RCA.Toutefois, l’ensemble apparemment homogène que constitue l’Afriquecentrale révèle quelques divergences au regard d’autres indicateursdémographiques. Par exemple, la proportion de la population qui vitdans les villes varie grandement entre les pays de la sous-région ; elle vade 10% au Burundi à 85% au Gabon. Cet écart se retrouve égalementdans les taux de croissance de la population urbaine qui sont inversementproportionnels aux taux d’urbanisation ; le taux le plus élevé se retrouveau Burundi (6,8%) et le plus faible au Gabon (2,1%). Les différences depopulation entre pays sont remarquables ; le géant démographiquequ’est la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) représente à luiseul à peu près la moitié de la population de l’espace CEEAC.Le tableau 3.1 résume les caractéristiques générales de la populationen Afrique centrale, telles que décrites plus haut.187
