author has been able to obta<strong>in</strong> knowledge, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />

advice given him by those gentleman he is enabled to<br />

pen <strong>the</strong>se papers for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> his less fortunate<br />

fellow- grooms, <strong>and</strong> for younger men hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>horse</strong>s under<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir care.<br />

NAVICULAR DISEASE<br />

Is chiefly met with <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e breeds <strong>of</strong> speedy <strong>horse</strong>s,<br />

with which <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir special k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> work a more<br />

constant energetic pressure is kept up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>of</strong><br />

this bone. <strong>The</strong> causes <strong>of</strong> this disease, like most o<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

are essentially <strong>of</strong> two k<strong>in</strong>ds, viz., predispos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> actual<br />

or direct causes. <strong>The</strong> first consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>management</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s from <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>y are foals to adult age. Weil-<br />

formed strong feet, all o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same, with-<br />

st<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> after-causes longest. Bad shoe<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

fast work under weight or draught are <strong>the</strong> common excit-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g causes <strong>of</strong> this disease <strong>and</strong> most o<strong>the</strong>r diseased<br />

conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>. Bad shoe<strong>in</strong>g is a<br />

vague expression, but I call all bad <strong>in</strong> degree that is not<br />

done by system, subord<strong>in</strong>ate to <strong>the</strong> necessary knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot. <strong>The</strong>re are some bad habits which have found<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir way <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> shoe<strong>in</strong>g shop, <strong>and</strong> which it is almost<br />

impossible to obliterate from <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> smith ;<br />

amongst which none are worse than par<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> frog<br />

<strong>and</strong> sole ; weaken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot with <strong>the</strong><br />

rasp, <strong>and</strong> s<strong>of</strong>ten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> foot with any mixture should<br />

also be avoided. As no skill is needed <strong>in</strong> attend<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

this step, alike conservative <strong>and</strong> remedial m tendency,<br />
