through <strong>the</strong> diseased organs, help<strong>in</strong>g to exhaust <strong>and</strong><br />

break down <strong>the</strong>ir structure, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>reby cause irrepa-<br />

rable damage. Ano<strong>the</strong>r serious evil is that we have<br />

sympa<strong>the</strong>tic disturbance from absorption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fly. I<br />

have always adopted mustard <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early stages <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>flu-<br />

enza, <strong>and</strong> with marked effect. Mr. Mavor, I am told, uses<br />

<strong>the</strong> vapour bath with great success. In many cases I<br />

have derived much benefit from giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> patient<br />

sulphate <strong>of</strong> magnesia <strong>in</strong> four-ounce doses twice a day,<br />

as a febrifuge, alterative, <strong>and</strong> purifier. Rowels <strong>and</strong><br />

setons are sometimes used, but do more harm than<br />

good In <strong>the</strong>rapeutics my mode <strong>of</strong><br />

proceed<strong>in</strong>g is similar to that which I adopt <strong>in</strong> simple<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenza; keep <strong>the</strong> patient's head to <strong>the</strong> open door<br />

day <strong>and</strong> night, <strong>and</strong> give stimulat<strong>in</strong>g tonic. Some prac-<br />

tical veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeons give iodide <strong>of</strong> potassium, <strong>and</strong><br />

also chlorate <strong>of</strong> potass, but not hav<strong>in</strong>g given <strong>the</strong>m myself<br />

I cannot speak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir effects. Diuretic medic<strong>in</strong>e is<br />

undoubtedly good <strong>in</strong> remov<strong>in</strong>g oedema <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r deposits,<br />

but have no power to arrest <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> effusion <strong>and</strong><br />

exudations. Contradictory as it may appear to my<br />

readers, I <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>e to <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion that if <strong>the</strong> real truth<br />

could be fully known, it would be found that effusion is<br />

actually facilitated dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> diuretic medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

This is known, that dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> cathartic medi-<br />

c<strong>in</strong>e, which abstracts <strong>the</strong> watery part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blood by<br />

way <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowels, as diuretics do by <strong>the</strong> kidneys, <strong>the</strong><br />

carthral action (<strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> effusion) goes on more<br />

rapidly. Some patients will rally to a certa<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t,<br />
