adm<strong>in</strong>istered. <strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g should be given :—Turpen-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>e one ounce, g<strong>in</strong>ger half a drachm, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>in</strong>seed meal<br />

half an ounce ; this to be made <strong>in</strong>to a ball with syrup or<br />

treacle. Some prefer res<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> turpent<strong>in</strong>e. When<br />

attended with fever aconite <strong>and</strong> digitalis may be given,<br />

but a veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon should be called <strong>in</strong>.<br />

INFLAMMATION OF THE BOWELS.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>es are subject to two different k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation, namely, that <strong>of</strong> mucous membrane or<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternal l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gut ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> second is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> external<br />

coat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowels. <strong>The</strong>se are very different <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

character, <strong>and</strong> consequently <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir mode <strong>of</strong> <strong>treatment</strong>.<br />

Inflammation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mucous membrane is accompanied<br />

with violent purg<strong>in</strong>g, too <strong>of</strong>ten from overdoses <strong>of</strong> physic<br />

be<strong>in</strong>cc adm<strong>in</strong>istered, or from acid generated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowels<br />

by a bad quality <strong>of</strong> food, or from o<strong>the</strong>r unknown causes.<br />

In addition to purg<strong>in</strong>g, considerable pam attends this<br />

disease, which is <strong>in</strong>dicated by <strong>the</strong> animal look<strong>in</strong>g round<br />

at its flanks, with a heav<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> its breath<strong>in</strong>g, accom-<br />

panied by quick, feeble pulse, <strong>and</strong> hot mouth, ears, <strong>and</strong><br />

legs. This is a compla<strong>in</strong>t mostly met with <strong>in</strong> high-fed<br />

<strong>horse</strong>s, as <strong>in</strong>deed are most cases <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation. High<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g has a tendency to <strong>in</strong>duce <strong>in</strong>flammation. <strong>The</strong><br />

sudden exposure <strong>of</strong> high-fed animals to a warm from a<br />

cold atmosphere, <strong>and</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g allowed to dr<strong>in</strong>k plentifully<br />

<strong>of</strong> cold water when <strong>in</strong> a heated condition, or hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir bellies <strong>and</strong> legs wetted when <strong>in</strong> an overheat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

condition, are all causes that <strong>in</strong>duce this compla<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

This is a po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> that<br />

<strong>the</strong> groom should never overlook. <strong>The</strong> <strong>horse</strong> should upon
