made sharp to allow <strong>of</strong> its be<strong>in</strong>g pushed through <strong>the</strong><br />

sk<strong>in</strong> : sometimes, however, it is left blunt, <strong>and</strong> it is <strong>the</strong>n<br />

passed through <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> by an open<strong>in</strong>g made with a<br />

lancet. <strong>The</strong>y are <strong>of</strong>ten used with a h<strong>and</strong>le, <strong>in</strong>to which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are screwed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> this way <strong>the</strong>ir course is more<br />

certa<strong>in</strong>ly directed. In <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g a seton <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> is<br />

first punctured transversely with a lancet, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> seton<br />

needle is directed between <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> muscles, its<br />

course be<strong>in</strong>g favoured by <strong>the</strong> pull<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong><br />

by <strong>the</strong> left h<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stru-<br />

ment. It is usually carried from a po<strong>in</strong>t above down-<br />

ward to permit <strong>of</strong> a free discharge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> matter,<br />

<strong>and</strong> when carried far enough a fresh <strong>in</strong>cision<br />

is made with <strong>the</strong> lancet to allow <strong>of</strong> its exit. This<br />

is preferable to penetrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> simply with<br />

a sharp needle, as <strong>the</strong> wounds thus made are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

so small that <strong>the</strong> pus cannot escape freely, <strong>and</strong><br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g imprisoned produces a source <strong>of</strong> irritation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> seton hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>in</strong>troduced, it is necessary<br />

to fix it by some means ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> most common way <strong>of</strong><br />

do<strong>in</strong>g this is to tie both ends toge<strong>the</strong>r, but this is<br />

objectionable, as <strong>the</strong> animal may by rubb<strong>in</strong>g get<br />

<strong>the</strong> loop fast <strong>and</strong> tear it out, leav<strong>in</strong>g an ugly tear.<br />

<strong>The</strong> best way is to make a large knot at each end<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tape, which should be about four <strong>in</strong>ches longer<br />

than <strong>the</strong> wound on each end, so that <strong>the</strong> matter<br />

can be worked out by pull<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cord up <strong>and</strong> down.<br />

In spav<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> vaiious o<strong>the</strong>r forms <strong>of</strong> lameness <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are at times employed with great benefit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

neighbourhood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> malady. <strong>The</strong>ir effect is some-<br />

times <strong>in</strong>creased by smear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> seton with an
