In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 1G1<br />

lungs will be <strong>in</strong> a very short time studded with<br />

tubercles, a test that <strong>the</strong> lungs have become affected<br />

<strong>the</strong> breath<strong>in</strong>g will be difficult, <strong>and</strong> a stifled grat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

noise accompanies it, which is a certa<strong>in</strong> prelude to death.<br />

A common catarrah has <strong>of</strong>ten been mistaken for<br />

gl<strong>and</strong>ers, but a little attention will soon enable any<br />

one to perceive <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ction between <strong>the</strong> two diseases.<br />

Catarrh is usually accompanied with fever, sore throat,<br />

general cough, loss <strong>of</strong> appetite, <strong>and</strong> a discharge from both<br />

nostrils, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> most cases very copious, sometimes<br />

purulent; <strong>the</strong> gl<strong>and</strong>s are generally swollen on both sides<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> throat, <strong>and</strong> are moveable <strong>and</strong> hot to <strong>the</strong> touch.<br />

<strong>The</strong> proper means be<strong>in</strong>g adopted all <strong>the</strong> symptoms are<br />

abated.<br />

Strangles have also been mistaken for gl<strong>and</strong>ers, <strong>and</strong><br />

usually affects young <strong>horse</strong>s only. At first <strong>the</strong>y resemble<br />

a comon cold with a severe cough <strong>and</strong> wheez<strong>in</strong>g, accom-<br />

panied with considerable thicken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g between<br />

<strong>the</strong> jawbones, <strong>the</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g becom<strong>in</strong>g harder towards <strong>the</strong><br />

middle, a fluid can be felt <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre, which ultimately<br />

breaks, <strong>and</strong> a discharge flows from it. <strong>The</strong> mucous-<br />

membrane <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nostrils is <strong>of</strong> a very red colour, <strong>and</strong> an<br />

ample discharge cont<strong>in</strong>ues which is mixed with pus from<br />

nearly <strong>the</strong> commencement. <strong>The</strong> remote cause <strong>of</strong><br />

gl<strong>and</strong>ers has hi<strong>the</strong>rto baffled all <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

veter<strong>in</strong>ary art, its true history be<strong>in</strong>g still unknown, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> unsatisfactory <strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong> medical authors throw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

no light on it. All that can be ga<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> perusal <strong>of</strong><br />

numerous works upon this disease by past <strong>and</strong> present<br />

authors is that <strong>the</strong> disease is highly contagious. All<br />

authors agree as to <strong>the</strong> symptoms, <strong>and</strong> but little differ-<br />
