mode <strong>of</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beef tapeworm. I will<br />

expla<strong>in</strong> to you one k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> experiment I made. I took<br />

a portion <strong>of</strong> a tapeworm compris<strong>in</strong>g several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

or segments towards <strong>the</strong> tail end, each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se jo<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

when perfectly matured <strong>and</strong> ripe conta<strong>in</strong> at least 80,000<br />

eggs, <strong>the</strong>refore you can easily reckon up how many<br />

<strong>the</strong>re would be <strong>in</strong> 12,000 jo<strong>in</strong>ts, suppos<strong>in</strong>g all were<br />

mature. I took a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se jo<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> put <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>in</strong>to milk to make <strong>the</strong>m easy <strong>of</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration, <strong>and</strong> with<br />

<strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Simons <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r friends, fed<br />

a calf with <strong>the</strong>m. Well, <strong>the</strong>y went down, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> calf<br />

was none <strong>the</strong> worse apparently ; however, after a time it<br />

was evident that someth<strong>in</strong>g had gone wrong, <strong>and</strong> what<br />

had taken place was this, some thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> eggs had<br />

been swallowed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se eggs all that were perfectly<br />

ripe conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terior each a little creature<br />

called <strong>the</strong> six-hooded embryo. This small embryo has<br />

a round body provided with two needles <strong>in</strong> front, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

pair <strong>of</strong> hooks on each side ; with <strong>the</strong> two little needles it<br />

bores, <strong>and</strong> with a pair <strong>of</strong> hooks it tears <strong>the</strong> flesh <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

host. After <strong>the</strong> calf had swallowed <strong>the</strong> eggs, <strong>the</strong> shell <strong>of</strong><br />

each egg was dissolved by <strong>the</strong> gastric juice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth<br />

stomach, all <strong>the</strong> little embryo thus mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir escape ;<br />

this, you see, was k<strong>in</strong>dness to <strong>the</strong> embryo if it was unfair<br />

to <strong>the</strong> calf. <strong>The</strong> thirty thous<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> little creatures,<br />

rejoic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g free, soon made <strong>the</strong>ir way through <strong>the</strong><br />

flesh <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> host. <strong>The</strong> little calf did not succumb to<br />

<strong>the</strong>se wounds, as <strong>the</strong> human bearer <strong>of</strong>ten does to <strong>the</strong><br />

trichime ; by our assistance it recovered. Well, we<br />

calculated how lung it would be before <strong>the</strong>se little em-<br />

bryos would arrive at <strong>the</strong> higher level stage <strong>of</strong> develop-
