Ii <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has an <strong>in</strong>ward gait <strong>of</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g, chalk <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side<br />

it is a speedy-cutter, which is <strong>the</strong> worst form <strong>of</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is apt to knock one leg from under it with<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> result be<strong>in</strong>g a severe fall <strong>and</strong> broken knees<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>, <strong>and</strong> perhaps a broken neck to <strong>the</strong> rider or<br />

driver. After <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has been exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> front,<br />

st<strong>and</strong> beh<strong>in</strong>d it whilst be<strong>in</strong>g walked <strong>and</strong> trotted, <strong>and</strong> you<br />

will <strong>the</strong>n be able to detect <strong>the</strong> least uneas<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> its<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> ascerta<strong>in</strong> if it is a loose goer. Some <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

have an outward gait <strong>of</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> look as if <strong>the</strong>y tried<br />

to throw away <strong>the</strong>ir feet at every step; this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong><br />

action is objectionable, as a <strong>horse</strong> with such an action<br />

soon tires on a journey. Horses with a short conf<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

step can never have good action, <strong>and</strong> are always dis-<br />

agreeable to ride. In walk<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> knee should be<br />

moderately bent, but only sufficiently so to enable <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> to walk clear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stones <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r objects he<br />

may meet with on <strong>the</strong> road, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong> foot is set<br />

down <strong>the</strong> foot should fall flat, so that <strong>the</strong> toe does not<br />

strike <strong>the</strong> ground first. <strong>The</strong> legs should be thrown<br />

straight out, bear<strong>in</strong>g nei<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> right or left, nor<br />

should <strong>the</strong> sole be seen by a person st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g on ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

side. In <strong>the</strong> larger-sized <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>the</strong> step should be<br />

lengthy <strong>and</strong> regular, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> smaller-sized smart <strong>and</strong>
