<strong>and</strong> barb are free from this compla<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>and</strong> no doubt our<br />

climate has someth<strong>in</strong>g to answer for <strong>in</strong> this respect.<br />

This is a disease aris<strong>in</strong>g from an affection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> larynx<br />

<strong>and</strong> superior portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dpipe. When a <strong>horse</strong> so<br />

affected has been hard trotted or galloped, he may be<br />

heard at some distance to utter a grunt<strong>in</strong>g sound, or<br />

when he is st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g if touched suddenly with a stick or<br />

whip he will grunt or groan. Dealers are <strong>of</strong>ten seen to<br />

lay hold <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> by <strong>the</strong> head with <strong>the</strong> left h<strong>and</strong>,<br />

while with <strong>the</strong> right h<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y feign to hit <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong><br />

he will cr<strong>in</strong>ge away from <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> utter a loud grunt if<br />

he is a roarer. This disease is supposed to be produced<br />

by a thicken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> larynx <strong>and</strong> upper portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>dpipe, <strong>in</strong> consequence <strong>of</strong> previous <strong>in</strong>flammation, <strong>and</strong><br />

After strangles this disease frequently follows, <strong>and</strong> it is a<br />

noticeable fact that <strong>horse</strong>s whose sires or dams were<br />

carriage or harness <strong>horse</strong>, is <strong>the</strong> cruel <strong>and</strong> absurd<br />

natural form, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> constant stra<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> muscles <strong>of</strong><br />

maxillary gl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> larynx becomes affected, thicken<strong>in</strong>g<br />

takes place, <strong>and</strong> for our foolisii fashion, a <strong>horse</strong> that<br />

would have been worth a hundred gu<strong>in</strong>eas becomes fit<br />

only for a cab <strong>horse</strong>. By this action <strong>the</strong> larynx <strong>and</strong><br />

superior muscles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dpipe are circumscribed <strong>and</strong><br />

ultimately become semi-paralysed with consequent loss<br />

<strong>of</strong> power <strong>and</strong> action ; <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g not be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
