who have had a whitlow on <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>in</strong>ger will have some<br />

sympathy for <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> when suffer<strong>in</strong>g from poll-evil.<br />

This disease is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a blow en <strong>the</strong> head between<br />

<strong>the</strong> ears, <strong>of</strong>ten caused by lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> out <strong>of</strong><br />

low <strong>stable</strong> doors, when <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> will at times throw up.<br />

its heal <strong>and</strong> strike it upon <strong>the</strong> door-frame with great<br />

force. If this is not attended to at <strong>the</strong> time, <strong>the</strong> blood<br />

becomes congealed, suppuration sets <strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> matter f<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

its way between <strong>the</strong> bone <strong>and</strong> muscles, <strong>and</strong> a deep<br />

slough<strong>in</strong>g wound is <strong>the</strong> result before it is fully recognised<br />

by <strong>the</strong> owner. Sometimes this is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a blow<br />

given by an unmerciful rider, at o<strong>the</strong>r times it is brought<br />

on by <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> strik<strong>in</strong>g its head upon <strong>the</strong> under-part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> manger ; it is also <strong>of</strong>ten brought on by <strong>the</strong> ligaments<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g stretched by that horrible piece <strong>of</strong> torture, a tight<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g-re<strong>in</strong> ; but from whatever cause <strong>the</strong> malady pro-<br />

ceeds, it is frequently exceed<strong>in</strong>gly troublesome <strong>and</strong><br />

tedious to cure. If noticed before suppuration takes<br />

place, every means should be adopted to suppress <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation, <strong>and</strong> if possible to disperse <strong>the</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> a laxative k<strong>in</strong>d should be given, <strong>and</strong> hot<br />

fomentations should be constantly applied, afterwards a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> sponge or l<strong>in</strong>en cloth should be placed upon <strong>the</strong><br />

part affected, <strong>and</strong> kept constantly wet with arnica lotion,<br />

one part arnica (British pro<strong>of</strong>) to forty <strong>of</strong> pure spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

water. If <strong>the</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g rema<strong>in</strong>s hard for two or three<br />

days <strong>in</strong> spite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above <strong>treatment</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n use strong<br />

t<strong>in</strong>cture <strong>of</strong> iod<strong>in</strong>e ;<br />

this should be pa<strong>in</strong>ted upon <strong>the</strong> part<br />

with a s<strong>of</strong>t brush, <strong>and</strong> will frequently take away <strong>the</strong><br />

swell<strong>in</strong>g by absorption. If it is found that <strong>the</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g
