<strong>in</strong>g generally subsides considerably <strong>in</strong> a short time, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> gl<strong>and</strong>s are not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> channel, but<br />

firmly adhere to <strong>the</strong> jaw. This is a never fail<strong>in</strong>g test<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease, <strong>and</strong> besides, it is quite certa<strong>in</strong> that if <strong>the</strong><br />

discharge flows from both nostrils it is not gl<strong>and</strong>ers.<br />

At this stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease <strong>the</strong> mucous membrane<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nostril becomes dark purple or <strong>of</strong> a livid colour,<br />

sometimes <strong>of</strong> a tone <strong>in</strong>termediate between <strong>the</strong> two<br />

shades. In. some <strong>in</strong>stances <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>of</strong><br />

those parts which varies from <strong>the</strong> common appearance*<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a purple cast <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> high red which<br />

usually accompanies <strong>in</strong>flammation. This is followed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> small circular tubercles on <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nostrils, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong> a short time ulcerate<br />

<strong>and</strong> discharge puss. When this has taken place, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

can no longer be a doubt that <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is gl<strong>and</strong>ered,<br />

<strong>and</strong> care must be taken not to mistake <strong>the</strong> lacrymal or<br />

tear-duct for an ulcer. This duct is a cont<strong>in</strong>uation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> muzzle, which is situated a little way<br />

up <strong>the</strong> nostril, while <strong>the</strong> ulcerated tubercles are placed<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> mucus membrane above <strong>the</strong> duct, <strong>and</strong> well<br />

marked by a l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> separation. After <strong>the</strong> formation<br />

<strong>of</strong> tubercles, <strong>the</strong> animal is sure to have become con-<br />

stitutionally affected, its coat will stare <strong>and</strong> fall <strong>of</strong>f,<br />

it will lose flesh, <strong>and</strong> its belly will be tucked up.<br />

Cough will follow, <strong>the</strong> appetite will be much affected,<br />

accompanied by a rapid dim<strong>in</strong>ution <strong>of</strong> strength, <strong>the</strong><br />

tubercles will multiply, discharge will be more abund-<br />

ant, <strong>and</strong> will assume a purulent <strong>and</strong> bloody ap-<br />

pearance, accompanied by a very foetid smell. <strong>The</strong><br />

ulceration will extend down to <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dpipe, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>
