158 <strong>The</strong> Management <strong>and</strong> Treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horse,<br />

GLANDERS.<br />

Of all <strong>the</strong> diseases that are <strong>in</strong>cidental to <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is none to compare to this most malignant <strong>and</strong><br />

most to be dreaded <strong>in</strong> a steed. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>stant <strong>the</strong>re is any<br />

appearance <strong>of</strong> it <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> should be removed to a place<br />

by itself, as this malady is extremely <strong>in</strong>fectious, <strong>and</strong> from<br />

want <strong>of</strong> due caution whenever a suspicion <strong>of</strong> it is enter-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong>ed, <strong>the</strong> most disastrous consequences may result.<br />

Although gl<strong>and</strong>ers has been known to mank<strong>in</strong>d for<br />

upwards <strong>of</strong> 1800 years <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> symptoms well described,<br />

yet it is lamentable to state that up to <strong>the</strong> present hour<br />

no cure has been found for it. No disease to which <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> is subject has had more experiments made with it,<br />

<strong>and</strong> all have proved equally unsatisfactory, <strong>and</strong> although<br />

many cases are reported <strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s hav<strong>in</strong>g been cured <strong>of</strong><br />

gl<strong>and</strong>ers, yet when <strong>the</strong> same <strong>treatment</strong> adopted has<br />

been applied to an undoubted case <strong>of</strong> gl<strong>and</strong>ers it has<br />

always turned out a disappo<strong>in</strong>tment. Many men have<br />

also lost <strong>the</strong>ir lives by becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>occulated with <strong>the</strong><br />

foetid pus from <strong>the</strong> nostril, <strong>and</strong> fearful <strong>in</strong>deed is <strong>the</strong><br />

death <strong>of</strong> a man from this loathsome disease. Medical<br />

remedies have alleviated <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> this disease for<br />

a time <strong>and</strong> arrested its progress, but it is certa<strong>in</strong> to<br />

return <strong>and</strong> prove fatal at last, <strong>and</strong> it is doubtful if ever a<br />

case <strong>of</strong> true gl<strong>and</strong>ers was ever cured. <strong>The</strong>re are various<br />

diseases which <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir early stages have much <strong>the</strong> same<br />

appearance as gl<strong>and</strong>ers, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore it is necessary to<br />

watch <strong>the</strong>m narrowly, as <strong>of</strong> course perfect recovery may<br />

follow. <strong>The</strong> very first symptoms oi gl<strong>and</strong>ers is a constant<br />

discharge from <strong>the</strong> left nostril <strong>of</strong> mucus, clearer <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> a<br />

lighter colour than <strong>in</strong> common cold or catarrh, <strong>and</strong> more
