In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Eoad. 117<br />

recommended by Mr. Broad, <strong>of</strong> Star-street, Edgware-<br />

road, London, upwards <strong>of</strong> thirty years ago, <strong>and</strong> practised<br />

by him <strong>and</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r at Bath with success up to <strong>the</strong><br />

present time. It consists <strong>in</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g a notch with a<br />

draw<strong>in</strong>g-knife, about half an <strong>in</strong>ch from each side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

crack as near <strong>the</strong> coronet as possible, <strong>and</strong> about a quarter<br />

<strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>ch deep, sufficiently large to allow <strong>the</strong> embedd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> small <strong>horse</strong> nails. If <strong>the</strong> crack is long,<br />

cut two o<strong>the</strong>rs an <strong>in</strong>ch lower down, <strong>the</strong>n have a nail<br />

prepared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary way, with <strong>the</strong> exception that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are po<strong>in</strong>ted on <strong>the</strong> reverse side to prevent punctur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> quick, a case <strong>of</strong> which I never had. Never make<br />

a hole with a pricker or bore it with a redhot wire.<br />

Before us<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> nails are put <strong>in</strong>to a vice <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> head<br />

hammered to form a shoulder, to prevent it be<strong>in</strong>g driven<br />

too far <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> wall <strong>and</strong> break<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> hold. After<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g driven carefully through <strong>the</strong> notches, a long cl<strong>in</strong>ch<br />

is left, <strong>the</strong> crack is <strong>the</strong>n drawn closely toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong><br />

p<strong>in</strong>cers, <strong>and</strong> all made smooth with <strong>the</strong> rasp to prevent<br />

<strong>the</strong> nails be<strong>in</strong>g trodden out. <strong>The</strong>n with <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bar-shoe, <strong>and</strong> a constant application <strong>of</strong> cold water with<br />

a l<strong>in</strong>en b<strong>and</strong>age round <strong>the</strong> coronet, <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>of</strong> will soon<br />

grow sound, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> course <strong>of</strong> time grow out. Before<br />

quitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> diseases <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is yet one more, no better than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs I have<br />

described, but, if possible, it is worse. Those <strong>of</strong> my<br />

readers who have had <strong>the</strong> misfortune to have a <strong>horse</strong><br />

lame with<br />
