In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 35<br />

<strong>in</strong>telligent men among <strong>the</strong>m, men who have made <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lifetime, <strong>the</strong>refore it is not fair<br />

or just to call all grooms fools. <strong>The</strong>re is no doubt that<br />

if <strong>the</strong>re were more facilities given to <strong>the</strong> groom to study,<br />

we should f<strong>in</strong>d many bright men amongst <strong>the</strong>m. We<br />

send women to <strong>the</strong> hospitals to tra<strong>in</strong> for nurses, <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

it a great success <strong>and</strong> an immense help to <strong>the</strong> surgeon.<br />

Yet more <strong>the</strong> pity that <strong>the</strong>re is no class <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> college <strong>of</strong><br />

Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Surgeons where <strong>the</strong> grooms could go through<br />

a course <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sick <strong>and</strong> afflicted <strong>horse</strong>. A class<br />

<strong>of</strong> this sort would br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligent men to <strong>the</strong> front<br />

<strong>the</strong>y could pass an exam<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>and</strong> receive a certificate<br />

qualify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m as fit to take charge <strong>of</strong> sick <strong>horse</strong>s. <strong>The</strong><br />

man hold<strong>in</strong>g such certificate would be <strong>of</strong> great value to<br />

<strong>the</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon <strong>and</strong> gentlemen who employed<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong>y would not be <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> men whom we too<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> coachmen <strong>and</strong> grooms, <strong>and</strong>,<br />

because <strong>the</strong>y are ignorant, cause a stigma to be cast upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> whole fraternity. I am bound to say with Tom Hood<br />

that " evil is wrought by want <strong>of</strong> thought as much as<br />

want <strong>of</strong> heart." How <strong>of</strong>ten do we hear gentlemen <strong>and</strong><br />

grooms ask<strong>in</strong>g each o<strong>the</strong>r if <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s cough. It is a<br />

very rare occurrence that I have to answer " Yes," yet<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are times when both man <strong>and</strong> <strong>horse</strong> take cold<br />

without any given cause, but <strong>the</strong>y are very rare oc-<br />

currences. <strong>The</strong>n you may well ask, " How do <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

catch cold ? " Some will tell us, by st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g about <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> cold, which <strong>in</strong> some cases is true, <strong>and</strong> it is won-<br />

derful that a great many more <strong>horse</strong>s do not catch<br />

cold when we see grooms out under <strong>the</strong> pretence <strong>of</strong><br />

exercis<strong>in</strong>g, but <strong>in</strong> reality go<strong>in</strong>g from one public-house
