could take it <strong>in</strong> its food <strong>and</strong> water, <strong>and</strong> wash its nose<br />

<strong>and</strong> legs with salt <strong>and</strong> water. With <strong>the</strong> same view we<br />

hear <strong>of</strong> sulphate <strong>of</strong> iron be<strong>in</strong>g given <strong>in</strong> tiie water, <strong>the</strong><br />

pail be<strong>in</strong>g suspended <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> for <strong>the</strong> animal to<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k at pleasure. I have given <strong>the</strong> above upon <strong>the</strong><br />

authority <strong>of</strong> Mr H<strong>in</strong>de, but wT e have known it tried<br />

without effect. Whe<strong>the</strong>r this loathsome <strong>and</strong> fatal<br />

disease has its orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> deteriorated atmosphere <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>stable</strong>s is a problem that has not yet been solved, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is little doubt, however, that a strong preventitive is<br />

found <strong>in</strong> a clean, cool, well-aired <strong>stable</strong>, <strong>and</strong> expos<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> as much as possible to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

atmosphere. <strong>The</strong> gl<strong>and</strong>ers is unknown among <strong>the</strong><br />

Arabian <strong>horse</strong>s, <strong>in</strong> South America, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Circassia,<br />

where <strong>horse</strong>s are not conf<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>stable</strong>s. As a word <strong>of</strong><br />

caution to all my readers who may have to buy <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

at fairs from dealers <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong>y know noth<strong>in</strong>g, it<br />

is necessary <strong>the</strong>y should have <strong>the</strong>ir eyes open because<br />

by <strong>in</strong>famous trickery <strong>the</strong>y too frequently use means<br />

to deceive <strong>the</strong> purchaser. Tt is a well-known fact<br />

that if a gl<strong>and</strong>ered <strong>horse</strong> is galloped hard <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lungs <strong>in</strong> breath<strong>in</strong>g will thoroughly drive<br />

<strong>the</strong> mucous substance out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nostrils, <strong>and</strong> to make<br />

it cont<strong>in</strong>ue dry for a time <strong>the</strong>y blow up <strong>the</strong> diseased<br />

nostril (<strong>the</strong> left) powdered allum, or white vitrol, but<br />

a little attention will enable anyone to see that <strong>the</strong><br />

animal is <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> will make <strong>in</strong>effectual attempts to<br />

sneeze. <strong>The</strong> foetid smell, so different from any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

discharge, will conv<strong>in</strong>ce even <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>experienced person<br />

that <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is gl<strong>and</strong>ered.<br />

A favourite trick <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> dealer is to gallop <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g before br<strong>in</strong>edno" it to <strong>the</strong> fair.
