24G <strong>The</strong> Management <strong>and</strong> Treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horse,<br />

which I have already described. As <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

are <strong>of</strong> such importance, I would advise every one to<br />

acquire a knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> to do this <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />

better plan than to attend daily a well-employed shoe<strong>in</strong>g-<br />

forge, <strong>and</strong> for a small gratuity <strong>the</strong> smith will po<strong>in</strong>t out<br />

<strong>the</strong> different formations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> feet that come under his<br />

observations. If he has had experience he will be able<br />

to po<strong>in</strong>t out readily <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dications <strong>of</strong> disease ; he will<br />

also see why different formed feet require that <strong>the</strong> shoes<br />

should be modified <strong>and</strong> adapted to <strong>the</strong> peculiarity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

structure or probably exist<strong>in</strong>g disease. <strong>The</strong> next im-<br />

portant th<strong>in</strong>g to study is <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d, for it is this po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

that <strong>the</strong> coper knows well how to patch up for twenty-<br />

four hours, which is long enough for his purpose ; study<br />

all that I have said upon <strong>the</strong> different compla<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lungs. <strong>The</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d may be tested by what is known as<br />

cough<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>, that is by p<strong>in</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dpipe im-<br />

mediately beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> jaw. If <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> gives a long sharp<br />

cough it is an <strong>in</strong>dication that it is sound <strong>in</strong> that respect,<br />

but if <strong>the</strong> cough be short <strong>and</strong> hollow it may be <strong>in</strong>ferred<br />

that <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has unsound lungs. Let gentle pressure<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dpipe be frequently repeated <strong>in</strong> order to fully<br />

test this, <strong>and</strong> be sure to do this with your own h<strong>and</strong>, as<br />

dealers know that by compress<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dpipe with one<br />

h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> foref<strong>in</strong>ger <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is forced to<br />

cough while do<strong>in</strong>g so <strong>and</strong> produces that shrill sound con-<br />

sidered a test for good w<strong>in</strong>d, by <strong>the</strong> air rush<strong>in</strong>g through<br />

<strong>the</strong> limited aperture. Hav<strong>in</strong>g satisfied yourself <strong>in</strong> this re-<br />

spect, proceed to watch <strong>the</strong> flanks <strong>in</strong> breath<strong>in</strong>g; if <strong>the</strong> belly<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> animal swells out <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spirations <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ex-<br />

pirations are regular, it may be reasorably <strong>in</strong>ferred that
