ei<strong>the</strong>r dead or dy<strong>in</strong>g from this disease, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

greater number <strong>of</strong> cases fever is a premonitory symp-<br />

tom. In most case <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early stages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease<br />

it is not very rapid, but it is heavy <strong>in</strong> its action <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>ct, feel<strong>in</strong>g vibratory under <strong>the</strong> pressure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>ger ; <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cases it is hardly to be jierceived, so<br />

languid is its motion. <strong>The</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> cases that generally<br />

prove fatal, as many men do not underst<strong>and</strong> this disease,<br />

<strong>and</strong> take no notice <strong>of</strong> it <strong>in</strong> its early stages, so that <strong>the</strong><br />

attack assumes a violent form before remedies are ad-<br />

m<strong>in</strong>istered. In many cases that have come under <strong>the</strong><br />

author's observation, <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has been noticed to be<br />

dull <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>f its feed for a day or two before anyth<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

thought wrong. Such is <strong>the</strong> ignorance <strong>of</strong> many men,<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y do not know that a <strong>horse</strong> is ill until it falls<br />

down at plough or <strong>in</strong> its harness, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>re<br />

must be someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> matter, <strong>and</strong> send for <strong>the</strong><br />

veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon, who <strong>of</strong>ten arrives <strong>in</strong> time to see <strong>the</strong><br />

animal die, <strong>and</strong> he <strong>the</strong>n gets <strong>the</strong> credit <strong>of</strong> not be<strong>in</strong>g able<br />

to save <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>. We <strong>of</strong>ten hear cases <strong>of</strong> this sort<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g talked about by those who have charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s.<br />

This disease <strong>in</strong> its early stages is not very rapid, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

followed by dilated nostrils, coldness <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> extremities,<br />

<strong>and</strong> heav<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> flanks, which clearly <strong>in</strong>dicate an op-<br />

pression <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breath<strong>in</strong>g, differ<strong>in</strong>g, however, from <strong>the</strong><br />

hard laboured action <strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>in</strong> fever, <strong>and</strong> also <strong>the</strong><br />

irregular breath<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> broken-w<strong>in</strong>ded <strong>horse</strong>s, appear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as if two respirations were required for every <strong>in</strong>spiration<br />

<strong>of</strong> air to <strong>the</strong> lungs. In <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>the</strong> pulse is quick,<br />

hurried, <strong>and</strong> irregular, caused by <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong> which is felt<br />

by <strong>the</strong> animal at each attempt to draw <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air, giv<strong>in</strong>g
