made with honey. When <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is on a journey,<br />

<strong>and</strong> is attacked with this compla<strong>in</strong>t, it is necessary to<br />

bleed from <strong>the</strong> bars (but this should not be resorted to<br />

unless <strong>the</strong> driver does not possess a lancet at <strong>the</strong> time<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is attacked.) <strong>The</strong> bleed<strong>in</strong>g-place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

palate is <strong>the</strong> third bar, <strong>in</strong> a direct l<strong>in</strong>e between <strong>the</strong><br />

middle <strong>and</strong> second cutt<strong>in</strong>g teeth, <strong>and</strong> situated a little<br />

more than an <strong>in</strong>ch with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mouth. Here <strong>the</strong> ve<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> artery make a curve, <strong>and</strong> a sharp penknife may be<br />

used <strong>and</strong> cut down upon <strong>the</strong> spot where <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>tersect<br />

blood, which will stop <strong>of</strong> its own accord when two or<br />

three quarts have issued forth. Jn consequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

artery be<strong>in</strong>g cut across it will speedily shr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>and</strong> cease to<br />

bleed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> a piece <strong>of</strong> sponge or ra^<br />

with cold water will stop <strong>the</strong> bleed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ve<strong>in</strong>. In<br />

this operation <strong>the</strong> nerve is generally divided, but no evil<br />

effects will result from it. If <strong>the</strong> cut is made a little too<br />

much on one side, <strong>and</strong> nearly opposite <strong>the</strong> second <strong>in</strong>cisor<br />

tooth, it is possible that <strong>the</strong> artery may be wounded<br />

longitud<strong>in</strong>ally, but not divided, <strong>in</strong> which case <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

great difficulty <strong>in</strong> stopp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> flow <strong>of</strong> blood; <strong>the</strong> most<br />

effectual method <strong>of</strong> stopp<strong>in</strong>g which is to make a large<br />

pledget <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>t or tow, as thick as a man's arm, roll it<br />

round a piece <strong>of</strong> str<strong>in</strong>g, put it across <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>'s mouth<br />

<strong>and</strong> tie <strong>the</strong> str<strong>in</strong>g across its nose. <strong>The</strong>n take a strap, <strong>and</strong><br />

buckle it tightly round <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>'s jaw, to prevent its<br />

open<strong>in</strong>g its mouth <strong>and</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g its tongue to displace <strong>the</strong><br />

pledget. This is sure to stop <strong>the</strong> bleed<strong>in</strong>g. It is only<br />

when <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is on a journey that <strong>the</strong> above mode <strong>of</strong><br />

bleed<strong>in</strong>g by cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bars should be resorted to, because
