io contact with, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> animal<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten <strong>in</strong>jures <strong>the</strong> eye itself. <strong>The</strong> edges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eyelids<br />

should be ano<strong>in</strong>ted with <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>in</strong>tment, which,<br />

after two or three applications will <strong>in</strong>variably effect a<br />

cure :— Hog's lard half an ounce, beeswax half an ounce,<br />

nitrated o<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>of</strong> mercury half an ounce.<br />

WARTS.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se are <strong>of</strong>ttimes a troublesome th<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> eye-<br />

lid, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>deed on any part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>. Many different<br />

modes are resorted to to take <strong>the</strong>m away, such as ty<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> silk tightly round <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

rot <strong>of</strong>f, but <strong>the</strong> quickest, most simple, <strong>and</strong> effective, is to<br />

take a pair <strong>of</strong> sharp scissors <strong>and</strong> cut <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong>f close to <strong>the</strong><br />

sk<strong>in</strong>. <strong>The</strong>n touch <strong>the</strong> roots with nitrate <strong>of</strong> silver or<br />

lunar-caustic, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y will heal up <strong>in</strong> a few days <strong>and</strong><br />

cease to trouble. <strong>The</strong>y seldom come aga<strong>in</strong> when once<br />

cut <strong>of</strong>f <strong>and</strong> caustic is applied.<br />

GUTTA SERENA.<br />

This is ano<strong>the</strong>r disease <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye which happily is<br />

not <strong>of</strong>ten met with, <strong>and</strong> exhibits itself by an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

dilation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pupil, which becomes immovable <strong>and</strong> has<br />

a bright glassy appearance. This is caused by a paralysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> optic nerve, or <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ret<strong>in</strong>a, or what is<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten called <strong>the</strong> mirror <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye, occasioned by a deter-<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> blood to <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> its consequent<br />

pressure on <strong>the</strong> optic nerve thus destroy<strong>in</strong>g its functions.<br />

Cures <strong>in</strong> this disease are very rare ;<br />

<strong>in</strong>deed I doubt if any<br />

well-au<strong>the</strong>nticated cases really exist. Of <strong>the</strong> three cases<br />

which have come under my observation dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> past
