periences a certa<strong>in</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> pleasure from this h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g<br />

he will soon become gentle under it, <strong>and</strong> show a very<br />

marked attachment to his keeper. Karey, <strong>in</strong> his <strong>treatment</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s, says "<strong>The</strong> <strong>horse</strong> that has only a natural<br />

fear <strong>of</strong> man is <strong>the</strong> easiest tra<strong>in</strong>ed, for when we have that<br />

which is Avild <strong>and</strong> lively we can tra<strong>in</strong> him to our will <strong>in</strong><br />

a very short time, as <strong>the</strong>y are generally quiet to obey.'<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is ano<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>d that are <strong>of</strong> a stubborn or vicious<br />

disposition, <strong>and</strong> although <strong>the</strong>y are not wild <strong>and</strong> do not<br />

require tam<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense it is generally understood,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are just as ignorant as <strong>the</strong> wild <strong>horse</strong>, if not more so,<br />

<strong>and</strong> need to be taught as much. In order to have <strong>the</strong>m<br />

obey quickly, it is necessary that <strong>the</strong>y should be made to<br />

fear <strong>the</strong>ir master, as <strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> perfect obedience<br />

from any <strong>horse</strong> we must first have him to fear us ; our<br />

motto is "Fear, love, <strong>and</strong> obey," <strong>and</strong> we must have <strong>the</strong><br />

fulfilment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two first before we can expect <strong>the</strong> latter.<br />

It is by our philosophy <strong>of</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g fear, love, <strong>and</strong> confi-<br />

dence, that we govern to our will every k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n, <strong>in</strong> order to take <strong>horse</strong>s as we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>of</strong> all k<strong>in</strong>ds,<br />

<strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to our lik<strong>in</strong>g, we always take with us,<br />

when we go <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> to a colt, a long switch whip<br />

(whalebone buggy whips are <strong>the</strong> best) with a good silk<br />

cracker so as to cut keenly <strong>and</strong> make a sharp report,<br />

accompanied with a sharp fierce word, will be sufficient<br />

to enliven <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> any <strong>horse</strong>. With this whip <strong>in</strong><br />

your right h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> lash po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g backward, enter <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>stable</strong> alone, as it is a great disadvantage <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

to have anyone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> with you, so that noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

should attract <strong>the</strong> colt's attention. If it is wild, you<br />

will soon see it on <strong>the</strong> opposite side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> to you,
