cause has been a spl<strong>in</strong>t not larger than a gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> wheat<br />

close up under <strong>the</strong> knee, <strong>and</strong> could be detected only<br />

by an excited action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pulse over <strong>the</strong> part affected.<br />

This sort <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>ten causes <strong>the</strong> groom <strong>and</strong> owner<br />

much anxiety; know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> to be lame <strong>and</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

unable to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> cause, it is put down to everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

but <strong>the</strong> right. It will be called chest founder, chronic<br />

founder, shoulder pitched, <strong>and</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs. When<br />

a boy I once asked <strong>the</strong> late Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dick what was<br />

chronic founder, <strong>and</strong> was told it was a very convenient<br />

phrase to use when you have a <strong>horse</strong> lame <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot<br />

<strong>and</strong> cannot f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> lameness. "We call it," said <strong>the</strong><br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, " chronic founder, <strong>and</strong> send many fools away<br />

satisfied." <strong>The</strong> symptoms <strong>of</strong> spl<strong>in</strong>t lameness are po<strong>in</strong>t-<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> has great difficulty <strong>in</strong> mov<strong>in</strong>g forward, cannot<br />

bend its knee, but can go back, which a <strong>horse</strong> lame <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> shoulder cannot do. <strong>The</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> spl<strong>in</strong>t is <strong>the</strong><br />

formation <strong>of</strong> a tumour under <strong>the</strong> j^riasteum, or mem-<br />

brane which covers <strong>the</strong> bone. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> tumour this becomes stretched to an unnatural<br />

degree, <strong>and</strong> causes <strong>the</strong> animal great pa<strong>in</strong>, ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

sensitive nature <strong>of</strong> this cover<strong>in</strong>g. It is difficult to con-<br />

ceive how spl<strong>in</strong>t should appear on <strong>the</strong> outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

small bones, except, we suppose, <strong>the</strong> space between <strong>the</strong>se<br />

bones is occupied by mechanism <strong>of</strong> an important charac-<br />

ter. It is much easier to account for <strong>the</strong>ir almost<br />

exclusive appearance on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> limb, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner<br />

spl<strong>in</strong>t bone be<strong>in</strong>g situated nearer <strong>the</strong> central part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

body than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> its con-<br />
