shoe <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s, yet <strong>the</strong>y perform long journeys with-<br />

out <strong>in</strong>jury to <strong>the</strong> feet. He also tells us that he has seen<br />

thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> unshod <strong>horse</strong>s br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g cotton some three<br />

hundred miles up <strong>the</strong> country <strong>in</strong> South America over<br />

bad roads, <strong>and</strong> not one per cent, ever went lame or<br />

became foot-sore. '• Free Lance " evidently is labour-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g under a mistake as regards <strong>the</strong> Arab <strong>and</strong> his <strong>horse</strong>s,<br />

unless, <strong>in</strong>deed, <strong>the</strong>y have much altered s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> author<br />

was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir conntry ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y do not shoe <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong> unless<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are go<strong>in</strong>g long journeys, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y are not shod<br />

with iron, ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> difficulty <strong>of</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g that<br />

metal ; but <strong>the</strong>y make a shoe <strong>of</strong> raw-hide which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

nail to <strong>the</strong> feet ; this shoe will wear for a week or ten<br />

days, quite long enough to enable <strong>the</strong>m to perform a<br />

long journey. <strong>The</strong> pack <strong>horse</strong>s aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> South America<br />

are certa<strong>in</strong>ly driven <strong>in</strong> droves to <strong>the</strong> Coast, with about<br />

one hundredweight <strong>of</strong> cotton on each <strong>horse</strong>, over roads<br />

bad enough for anyth<strong>in</strong>g ;<br />

yet <strong>the</strong>y have never been shod,<br />

<strong>and</strong> consequently <strong>the</strong>y are as Nature lormed <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong><br />

on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y do not travel fast, <strong>and</strong> not<br />

compelled to go as men may guide <strong>the</strong>m, but arc<br />

perfectly at liberty to pick <strong>the</strong>ir way, <strong>and</strong>, sensible<br />

beasts that <strong>the</strong>y are, will not put <strong>the</strong>ir feet upon<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g likely to hurt <strong>the</strong>m. Although <strong>horse</strong>s may<br />
