In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 49<br />

catarrhal affection. But when this subtle agency exists<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air <strong>and</strong> is exert<strong>in</strong>g itself, ano<strong>the</strong>r phenomenon is<br />

witnessed <strong>of</strong> an entirely different nature, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> essen-<br />

tially typhoid tendencies, <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g mark or<br />

effect <strong>of</strong> which is an unusual, peculiar, <strong>and</strong> general<br />

weakness, a most susceptible system, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> small,<br />

feeble character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pulse.<br />

Is <strong>in</strong>fluenza contagious <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>fectious ? My own<br />

experience leads me to <strong>the</strong> belief that it is not. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> last ten years I have had upwards <strong>of</strong> one hundred<br />

cases <strong>of</strong> undoubted <strong>in</strong>fluenza, <strong>and</strong> have watched it very<br />

closely, yet up to <strong>the</strong> present time I have never seen one<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle clear case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> affected animal communicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

distemper. I have had cases <strong>of</strong> young <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> farm<br />

yard all runn<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same trough,<br />

eat<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same manger ; some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m have had<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenza, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs not. We frequently see one or more<br />

<strong>horse</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a large <strong>stable</strong> affected, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stall<br />

next to <strong>the</strong> worst case perfectly healthy. I must rem<strong>in</strong>d<br />

my readers that contagion, strictly speak<strong>in</strong>g, implies <strong>the</strong><br />

capability <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> diseases be<strong>in</strong>g produced by actual<br />

contact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> healthy animal with some part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one<br />

labour<strong>in</strong>g under disease, <strong>and</strong> not through <strong>the</strong> medium <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> atmosphere. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong>fection is <strong>the</strong> word<br />

used to denote <strong>the</strong> propagation <strong>of</strong> maladies through <strong>the</strong><br />

medium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> air, which becomes charged with <strong>the</strong> con-<br />

tam<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple given <strong>of</strong>f <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> exhalations<br />

from <strong>the</strong> diseased animal, <strong>and</strong> which excites <strong>the</strong> like<br />

disease <strong>in</strong> those animals that are subject to its <strong>in</strong>fluence,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y be<strong>in</strong>g predisposed to take <strong>the</strong> malady. Now I come<br />

to <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenza. Most <strong>in</strong>fluenzas have been<br />
