most likely to relieve it, after which use some excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

means to give energy to <strong>the</strong> absorbents, <strong>and</strong> for this<br />

purpose noth<strong>in</strong>g is better than corrosive sublimate <strong>in</strong><br />

solution, two gra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> an ounce <strong>and</strong> a-half <strong>of</strong> water will<br />

be found quite strong enough. This should be syr<strong>in</strong>ged<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> eye twice or three times a day. If opacity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> lens has taken place we are not aware <strong>of</strong> anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that will remove it, <strong>in</strong>deed it is a given fact amongst <strong>the</strong><br />

veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeons <strong>of</strong> note that no cure has been found,<br />

yet it is always advisable to call <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> veteri-<br />

nary surgeon <strong>in</strong> diseases <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye, for although <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are few <strong>in</strong> number <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>of</strong> vital consequence, as <strong>the</strong><br />

least mistake <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> term<strong>in</strong>ates <strong>in</strong> total bl<strong>in</strong>d-<br />

ness.<br />

THE HAW.<br />

It is not an unusual th<strong>in</strong>g for a thicken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye to take place, <strong>and</strong> protrude on <strong>the</strong> fore<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eyeball ; <strong>in</strong> this disease <strong>the</strong> retractor muscle<br />

pulls back <strong>the</strong> eye to protect it from <strong>the</strong> irritat<strong>in</strong>g effect<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> light, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> thicken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> haw pushes it<br />

forward, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> consequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjacent parts be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

thickened no retraction can take place. In former times<br />

<strong>the</strong> old veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeons used to cut out <strong>the</strong> haw <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> eye, but that cruel, useless, <strong>and</strong> absurd practice is<br />

now ab<strong>and</strong>oned by <strong>the</strong> enlightened veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon,<br />

who knows <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> haw <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> allows Nature's h<strong>and</strong>iwork to rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tact. Nature<br />

evidently <strong>in</strong>tended <strong>the</strong> haw <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye to protect <strong>the</strong> eye<br />

from dust <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>sects. <strong>The</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has no h<strong>and</strong>s to take<br />

out dust or <strong>in</strong>sects that may get <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> eye, so Nature
