STOMACH STAGGERS.<br />

This compla<strong>in</strong>t, like <strong>the</strong> former, is <strong>of</strong>ten attributable<br />

to acrid substances taken <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> stomach when <strong>the</strong><br />

animal is <strong>in</strong> an exhausted state from long-cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

labour. It is most frequently met with <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> farm<br />

or cart <strong>horse</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> overfeed<strong>in</strong>g",<br />

especially if <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is fed upon food <strong>of</strong> bad<br />

quality. Farmers <strong>of</strong>ten resort to <strong>the</strong> false economy <strong>of</strong><br />

sell<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong>ir good hay <strong>and</strong> corn, keep<strong>in</strong>g only <strong>the</strong><br />

worst for home consumption, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n are dreadfully<br />

disappo<strong>in</strong>ted when <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir stock <strong>in</strong> an unhealthy<br />

condition, <strong>and</strong> attribute <strong>the</strong> cause to everyth<strong>in</strong>g but<br />

<strong>the</strong> right, viz,, <strong>the</strong>ir own foolish greed, grasp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> shadow <strong>and</strong> los<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> substance. Careless ser-<br />

vants will too <strong>of</strong>ten neglect <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> after-<br />

wards, when food is placed before <strong>the</strong>m while <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are ravenously hungry, <strong>the</strong>y swallow it rapidily <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> too large a quantity without be<strong>in</strong>g properly masti-<br />

cated, consequently it swells <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stomach <strong>and</strong> stretches<br />

it far beyond its natural capacity; its action be<strong>in</strong>^<br />

<strong>the</strong>reby impaired, <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong> is unduly acted upon, <strong>and</strong><br />

gidd<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> drows<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong>duced, which occasion<br />

stagger<strong>in</strong>g. Too <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is kept short <strong>of</strong><br />

water while abundance <strong>of</strong> food is placed before it, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g a little water before feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> a small<br />

quantity <strong>of</strong> food at first to assist <strong>the</strong> animal <strong>in</strong> convert<strong>in</strong>g<br />

its food <strong>in</strong>to a pulp <strong>and</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> operation <strong>of</strong> diges-<br />

tion, without a judicious quantity <strong>of</strong> water is given to <strong>the</strong><br />

exhausted <strong>horse</strong> with its food, <strong>the</strong> stomach becomes gorged<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural juices are <strong>in</strong>adequate to <strong>the</strong> performance<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>fice. It is no uncommon occurrence for farmers
