would be considered legally sound. This, however,<br />

seems strange, as a <strong>horse</strong> with thrush may, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

is likely to assume a worse aspect, particularly if not<br />

remedied <strong>in</strong> time, <strong>and</strong> hence it may lead to positive<br />

unsoundness. <strong>The</strong> remedies <strong>of</strong> this compla<strong>in</strong>t are<br />

undoubtedly by astr<strong>in</strong>gents. <strong>The</strong> foot should be pared<br />

<strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> loose <strong>and</strong> rotten horn, <strong>the</strong>n cut away <strong>the</strong><br />

diseased portion, wash with warm water strong with<br />

soda, after which it may be dressed every day with <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g put on a pledget <strong>of</strong> tow:—Blue vitriol two<br />

ounces, white vitriol one ounce, tar one pound, hog's-<br />

lard one pound. <strong>The</strong> vitriols to be f<strong>in</strong>ely powdered<br />

<strong>and</strong> mixed with <strong>the</strong> lard <strong>and</strong> tar, or <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

former carbolised oil may be used with good effect.<br />

It is not judicious to stop <strong>the</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> thrush quickly,<br />

as by so do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> humour may ascend to <strong>the</strong> heels<br />

<strong>and</strong> leave <strong>the</strong> animal with bad heels <strong>and</strong> swelled legs.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> <strong>of</strong> thrush <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>'s feet should<br />

be kept dry <strong>and</strong> clean.<br />

SEEDY TOE<br />

Is ano<strong>the</strong>r disagreeable <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ttimes troublesome com-<br />

pla<strong>in</strong>t. Seedy toe <strong>and</strong> its companion canker are to all <strong>in</strong>tents<br />

<strong>and</strong> purposes one disease, only hav<strong>in</strong>g different situations<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot. This compla<strong>in</strong>t is met with <strong>in</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>of</strong> all<br />

a<strong>of</strong>es, <strong>and</strong> mostlv <strong>in</strong> well-bred <strong>horse</strong>s. <strong>The</strong>re is a wast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or decay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fibres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>of</strong>, between <strong>the</strong> outside<br />

horn <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sensitive lamilla <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, <strong>of</strong>ten becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

hollow up to near <strong>the</strong> coronary r<strong>in</strong>g. Horses that have<br />

been ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>field</strong>s <strong>of</strong> damp black vegetable soil are <strong>the</strong><br />

most subject to seedy toe, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs that are turned
