<strong>the</strong> heart, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wo toge<strong>the</strong>r keep up that dilated<br />

condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small vessels which is <strong>the</strong> essence <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation. It is obvious that <strong>the</strong>re are two ways<br />

by which <strong>the</strong>se small vessels may be restored to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

healthy degree <strong>of</strong> contraction, <strong>the</strong> first is by lessen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

quantity <strong>of</strong> blood to <strong>the</strong> part <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> second by <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> contractility. In acute <strong>in</strong>flammation both <strong>the</strong>se<br />

remedies are required. If <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation be recent,<br />

<strong>the</strong> small vessels may recover <strong>the</strong>mselves if at once<br />

relieved from <strong>the</strong> undue quantity <strong>of</strong> blood sent from <strong>the</strong><br />

heart. In this case <strong>the</strong> abstraction <strong>of</strong> blood <strong>and</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

depress<strong>in</strong>g remedies will suffice ; but if <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation<br />

be chronic, <strong>the</strong> small vessels may have so lost <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

contractility as not to recover <strong>the</strong>mselves, though <strong>the</strong><br />

blood circulates through <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> dim<strong>in</strong>ished quantity,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> this case such remedies must be used as will<br />

restore <strong>the</strong> lost contractility ; precisely <strong>the</strong> same treat-<br />

ment is required as <strong>in</strong> congestion. <strong>The</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation is two-fold. It consists <strong>in</strong> dim<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> quantity <strong>of</strong> blood sent out by <strong>the</strong> heart on <strong>the</strong> one<br />

h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> restor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lost contractility on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

As <strong>in</strong>creased action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart occurs only <strong>in</strong> acute<br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation, it is <strong>in</strong> that form alone that general<br />

remedies are required ; <strong>the</strong>se are blood-lett<strong>in</strong>g, active<br />

purgatives, <strong>and</strong> depressants. Bleed<strong>in</strong>g alone, though<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten repeated, will not suffice to subdue <strong>in</strong>flammation,<br />

for each bleed<strong>in</strong>g is followed by reaction, <strong>and</strong> that re-
