both bones are alike on each leg ; feel carefully round<br />

between <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper <strong>and</strong> lower pastern, <strong>and</strong><br />

if <strong>the</strong>re is any enlargement no doubt <strong>the</strong>re is a r<strong>in</strong>g-<br />

bone form<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> hocks should be carefully ex-<br />

am<strong>in</strong>ed for " thorough-p<strong>in</strong>." Notice if <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hocks are swollen or what is called " capped," if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are look out for a kicker. See if <strong>the</strong>re is any enlargement<br />

about half way down <strong>the</strong> hock on <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>der<br />

part <strong>of</strong> it, if <strong>the</strong>re is he has a " curb," <strong>and</strong> it is sure he<br />

has weak hocks. Exam<strong>in</strong>e narrowly <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hocks for bone spav<strong>in</strong> ; <strong>the</strong> writer has known some<br />

dealers po<strong>in</strong>t to a large bone spav<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> say <strong>the</strong> animal<br />

had a f<strong>in</strong>e bony hock. Descend to <strong>the</strong> feet <strong>and</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />

for grease, look out for s<strong>and</strong>-crack <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> horny sub-<br />

stance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>of</strong>; see that <strong>the</strong>re is no canker separat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> substance from <strong>the</strong> fleshy part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot. Look care-<br />

fully under <strong>the</strong> heels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoes for a small stone ; if<br />

you f<strong>in</strong>d one, be sure <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has been "beaned."<br />

This is done with a lame <strong>horse</strong>:—<strong>The</strong> bean is placed<br />

with a pair <strong>of</strong> p<strong>in</strong>cers under <strong>the</strong> heel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

shoe <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sound foot; this caus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> animal<br />

great pa<strong>in</strong> makes it tread heavily on <strong>the</strong> lame<br />

foot, so that it has <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sound, whereas it is actually lame on both fore legs.<br />

A " beaned " <strong>horse</strong> has always a low action, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dealers will say it is only a natural low gait <strong>of</strong> action.<br />

Disbelieve all <strong>the</strong>ir excuses, <strong>and</strong> err on <strong>the</strong> safe side by<br />

reject<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> purchase. Sweep<strong>in</strong>g as my readers may<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> this condemnation, it is unfortunately too<br />

true, that this class <strong>of</strong> men are not to be depended<br />

upon, <strong>and</strong> consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> risks that <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>mselves
