action aga<strong>in</strong> establishes <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation<br />

By comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g depletion with depress<strong>in</strong>g remedies, we<br />

save blood <strong>and</strong> avert chronic disease. <strong>The</strong> great<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciple to be observed <strong>in</strong> acute <strong>in</strong>flammation is to<br />

subdue it at once, so as not to allow reaction, <strong>and</strong> give<br />

<strong>the</strong> small blood-vessels time to contract to <strong>the</strong>ir proper<br />

size. Aconite, given <strong>in</strong> ten-gra<strong>in</strong> doses <strong>in</strong> half-a-p<strong>in</strong>t<br />

<strong>of</strong> cold water every hour, dim<strong>in</strong>ishes <strong>the</strong> vascular <strong>and</strong><br />

nervous excitement after two or three doses ; <strong>the</strong><br />

patient seems <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to lie down <strong>and</strong> sleep, which<br />

seems to be <strong>the</strong> desideratum so strongly urged by Mr.<br />

Greaves—viz., get <strong>the</strong> weight <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> feet. Large doses<br />

<strong>of</strong> aconite produces alarm<strong>in</strong>g symptoms <strong>and</strong> considerable<br />

excitement, but <strong>in</strong> small doses I have <strong>of</strong>ten seen its<br />

sedative effects almost <strong>in</strong>stantaneous. Aconite be<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

most powerful medic<strong>in</strong>e, should be always used with<br />

great caution ; Flem<strong>in</strong>g's t<strong>in</strong>cture is by far <strong>the</strong> safest, if<br />

it is thought advisable to give large doses. <strong>The</strong> largest<br />

should be given first, <strong>and</strong> this must not exceed twenty<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ims, <strong>in</strong> one ounce <strong>of</strong> liq. ammonia acet. <strong>and</strong> a p<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong><br />

water ; <strong>in</strong> four hours half <strong>the</strong> quantity, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> five hours<br />

after one quarter. Over-doses <strong>of</strong> aconite are known by<br />

a great depression, anxious countenance, accelerated<br />

breath<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>creased rapidity, <strong>and</strong> dim<strong>in</strong>ished volume<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pulse, <strong>and</strong> contracted pupils. I well recollect<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Spooner say<strong>in</strong>g that belladonna was unequalled<br />

as a sedative, for you to have two objects <strong>in</strong> view <strong>in</strong><br />

adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g it, it be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best sedative, <strong>and</strong> also<br />

a laxative, which power no o<strong>the</strong>r sedative possesses.<br />

Mr. Brown says <strong>of</strong> aconite that, given with caution<br />

<strong>in</strong> small doses <strong>and</strong> well diluted, it has proved <strong>in</strong> his
