a blow, unless you can scare him, but if you can succeed<br />

<strong>in</strong> scar<strong>in</strong>g him, you can whip him without mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him mad. Fear <strong>and</strong> anger never exist toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

t<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>in</strong><strong>of</strong>fensive <strong>and</strong> harmless, permitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

play <strong>and</strong> caress it without <strong>in</strong>jury, <strong>The</strong>y never beat<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s, but treat <strong>the</strong>m gently ; <strong>the</strong>y speak to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> seem to hold discourse with <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

use <strong>the</strong>m as friends. <strong>The</strong>y never try to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

speed with whip or spur, unless <strong>in</strong> a case <strong>of</strong> great<br />

necessity ; however, when this happens <strong>the</strong>y set <strong>of</strong>f<br />

with amaz<strong>in</strong>g swiftness, <strong>and</strong> leap over obstacles with<br />

<strong>the</strong> agility <strong>of</strong> a buck, <strong>and</strong> if <strong>the</strong>ir rider happens to fall,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are so manageable that <strong>the</strong>y st<strong>and</strong> still <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>
