is <strong>in</strong> fact a preparation <strong>of</strong> mercury) which not unfre-<br />

quently happens with <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>of</strong> delicate constitution,<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g purgative should be given :—Kochelle<br />

salts seven ounces, sulphur two <strong>and</strong> a-quarter ounces,<br />

mixed with liquorice powder <strong>and</strong> treacle, <strong>and</strong> formed<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a ball, to be repeated for two or three days.<br />

If <strong>the</strong> limbs are much swollen <strong>the</strong> carbonate <strong>of</strong> potass<br />

may be given every time <strong>the</strong> animal dr<strong>in</strong>ks. Warm<br />

fomentations should be constantly applied to <strong>the</strong> limbs<br />

with cloths, as hot as <strong>the</strong> animal can bear it, or flannel<br />

b<strong>and</strong>ages, put on <strong>and</strong> kept constantly wet with hot water,<br />

as hot as a man can bear his h<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> it. After all<br />

<strong>treatment</strong>, even <strong>the</strong> most successful k<strong>in</strong>d, I doubt if it<br />

is entirely got out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> system, as all animals, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

once had farcy, are liable to a return <strong>of</strong> it at any time.<br />

NASAL GLEET.<br />

This is ano<strong>the</strong>r disease that has sometimes been<br />

mistaken for gl<strong>and</strong>ers, but it is quite dist<strong>in</strong>ct from it <strong>in</strong><br />

its affect<strong>in</strong>g both nostrils, <strong>and</strong> also be<strong>in</strong>g a discharge <strong>of</strong><br />

clear pus. <strong>The</strong>re is a constant discharge <strong>of</strong> a thickish<br />

fluid from <strong>the</strong> nostrils, proceed<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> mucous<br />

membrane which l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> nostrils <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />

cavity. This disease is frequently brought on by <strong>the</strong><br />

effects ol a long-cont<strong>in</strong>ued discharge from catarrh or<br />

cold. It is unattended with any feverish symptoms<br />

<strong>the</strong> flow <strong>of</strong> this thick mucous gleet is <strong>of</strong>ten very con-<br />

siderable <strong>and</strong> variable <strong>in</strong> colour. When <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g upon green food it <strong>of</strong>ten assumes a greenish hue,<br />

<strong>and</strong> sometimes even a grass-green colour. If its diet is<br />

<strong>of</strong> dry food, <strong>and</strong> it is kept <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n it assumes
