small glass syr<strong>in</strong>ge, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wound will heal up<br />

unsightly, <strong>of</strong>ten leav<strong>in</strong>g a big knee, <strong>and</strong> many times a<br />

stiff jo<strong>in</strong>t. After <strong>the</strong> wound has healed, <strong>the</strong> knee should<br />

be blistered with b<strong>in</strong>iodide <strong>of</strong> mercury to reduce <strong>the</strong><br />

gangrenous lump which is sure to form. All <strong>horse</strong>s that<br />

have cut <strong>the</strong>ir knees deep enough to allow <strong>the</strong> synovia<br />

to escape are never to be trusted aga<strong>in</strong>, as <strong>the</strong>y are sure<br />

to fall sooner or later. I now come to a very common<br />

<strong>and</strong> also a very trobblesome compla<strong>in</strong>t, known as<br />

LAMINITES,<br />

or fever <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> feet. That my readers may<br />

thoroughly underst<strong>and</strong> this compla<strong>in</strong>t, it will be<br />

necessary that I should give a description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> to show <strong>the</strong> beautiful h<strong>and</strong>iwork <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Creator,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ignorance <strong>of</strong> man, who <strong>of</strong>ten look upon <strong>the</strong> foot<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> as a solid block <strong>of</strong> horn, <strong>and</strong> treats it ac-<br />

cord<strong>in</strong>gly. <strong>The</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> fits<br />

him above all o<strong>the</strong>r animals, except <strong>the</strong> ass, for <strong>the</strong><br />

service <strong>of</strong> man. In short, had <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> been<br />

cleft, it would have been <strong>in</strong>capacitated from many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

useful departments <strong>of</strong> its employment, <strong>and</strong> a correct<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> structures <strong>of</strong> every part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot is<br />

<strong>in</strong>dispensably necessary to render us scientific overseers<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> farrier's art. <strong>The</strong> foot externally is composed<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crust, <strong>the</strong> sole, <strong>the</strong> bars, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> frog. <strong>The</strong><br />

crust is that portion which reaches from <strong>the</strong><br />

term<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hair to <strong>the</strong> ground, its greatest<br />

depth <strong>and</strong> thickness is <strong>in</strong> front, <strong>and</strong> denom<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>the</strong><br />

toe. It is more shallow at <strong>the</strong> sides, termed <strong>the</strong><br />

quarters, <strong>and</strong> still less beh<strong>in</strong>d, termed <strong>the</strong> heel. In a
