In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 171)<br />

will take place from <strong>the</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> duct, <strong>and</strong><br />

cause <strong>the</strong> vessel to burst ; <strong>in</strong> this event a fistulous ulcer<br />

will follow, which will be found very difficult to eradicate.<br />

In such a case it will be necessary to call <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aid<br />

<strong>of</strong> a practical veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon, as an operation must<br />

be had recourse to which can only be performed<br />

by an experienced <strong>and</strong> practical veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon.<br />

Strangles seem <strong>in</strong>cidental to <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> <strong>in</strong> all countries,<br />

<strong>and</strong> foreign veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeons conceived <strong>the</strong> idea<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>noculat<strong>in</strong>g to produce a milder degree <strong>of</strong> this<br />

no uncommon occurrence to see a so-called gentleman, if<br />

his <strong>horse</strong> is a little skittish, pull at its mouth with a<br />

sharp bit with sudden jerks, or saw its mouth from side<br />

to side with a sharp twisted bit ; this <strong>treatment</strong> fre-<br />

quently wounds deeply, especially between <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>in</strong>ders<br />

<strong>and</strong> tusk where <strong>the</strong> bit rests, <strong>and</strong> it is no uncommon<br />

occurrence for <strong>the</strong> entire flesh to be torn <strong>of</strong>f. <strong>The</strong> writer<br />

has had cases where <strong>the</strong> jawbone has been <strong>in</strong>jured <strong>and</strong><br />

pieces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bone spl<strong>in</strong>tered <strong>of</strong>f, <strong>and</strong> done by men who<br />

would be shocked at <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> not be<strong>in</strong>sf considered
