178 <strong>The</strong> Management <strong>and</strong> Treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horse,<br />

<strong>the</strong> purpose :—Barbadoes aloes two drachms, Castile soap<br />

one drachm, common salt four ounces, water one p<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

If <strong>the</strong>re is much fever with difficult breath<strong>in</strong>g, proceed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from an affection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chest, it will be necessary to<br />

resort to aconite <strong>in</strong> ten-drop doses. Old veter<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

surgeons used to bleed for this compla<strong>in</strong>t, but <strong>the</strong> writer<br />

is <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to th<strong>in</strong>k that it does more harm than good,<br />

as it has a tendency to retard suppuration, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> this<br />

compla<strong>in</strong>t all our efforts are to promote abundant sup-<br />

puration.<br />

Cool<strong>in</strong>g medic<strong>in</strong>e will be found <strong>of</strong> great benefit <strong>in</strong><br />

this compla<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>and</strong> two or three doses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

will be found very beneficial :—Nitre one ounce, tartar<br />

emetic two drachms. If <strong>the</strong>re is no fever <strong>the</strong> animal will<br />

soon manifest a desire to eat, <strong>and</strong> his food should chief!<br />

be oatmeal gruel, bran mashes, <strong>and</strong> green food if it can be<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed. Should <strong>the</strong>se not keep <strong>the</strong> bowels sufficiently<br />

open, which is <strong>of</strong> great consequence <strong>in</strong> this compla<strong>in</strong>t,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> above laxative must be given, which will have<br />

<strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> prevent<strong>in</strong>g eruptions, which <strong>of</strong>ten occur<br />

after this compla<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>and</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g more will be required<br />

if it operates freely. If, however, <strong>the</strong> compla<strong>in</strong>t is<br />

followed by weakness it will be necessary to have<br />

recourse to tonic medic<strong>in</strong>e, which should be repeated<br />

daily, until <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has recovered strength. <strong>The</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g is a beautiful tonic :— Qu<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e twenty gra<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

gentian two drachms, calomel two drachms, g<strong>in</strong>ger<br />

two drachms ; this should be made <strong>in</strong>to a ball <strong>and</strong> given<br />

every day. In bad cases <strong>of</strong> strangles, <strong>the</strong> parotid<br />

gl<strong>and</strong> will swell to a great size, <strong>and</strong> even become<br />

ulcerated, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cases an accumulation <strong>of</strong> fluid
