In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road, 209<br />

Nitre three drachms, emetic tartar one ami a-half drachm,<br />

<strong>and</strong> digitalis one drachm. This medic<strong>in</strong>e should be per-<br />

sisted <strong>in</strong> until <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> hangs its head <strong>and</strong> becomes<br />

half stupid, hav<strong>in</strong>g a flow <strong>of</strong> saliva from its mouth. In<br />

less than twenty-four hours after this condition has been<br />

effected <strong>the</strong> disease will be found to have completely sub-<br />

sided. It is a great mistake <strong>in</strong> this compla<strong>in</strong>t to suppose<br />

that <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> should be kept very close <strong>and</strong> warm, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> very cause which <strong>in</strong> agreat measure operated remotely <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>duc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> disorder is aga<strong>in</strong> brought <strong>in</strong>to play ; ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

keep warm cloth<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>, which will have a ten-<br />

dency to keep up <strong>in</strong>sensible perspiration. After this <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> should he well rubbed down, <strong>the</strong> legs <strong>in</strong> particular<br />

should have a smart application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> brush to set up a<br />

circulation, after which <strong>the</strong>y should be well wrapped <strong>in</strong><br />

ilanne I b<strong>and</strong>age to keep up <strong>the</strong> action ; <strong>the</strong> rubb<strong>in</strong>g should<br />

be repeated from time to time. <strong>The</strong> less <strong>the</strong> animal eats<br />

<strong>the</strong> better; corn should <strong>in</strong> no case be given; green food<br />

<strong>and</strong> mashes may be set before him, but this <strong>in</strong> only small<br />

quantities. If <strong>the</strong> oppression <strong>in</strong> breath<strong>in</strong>g now subsides,<br />

heat be restored to <strong>the</strong> limbs, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> animal lies down,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se are sure <strong>in</strong>dications that <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is better, <strong>and</strong><br />

that <strong>the</strong> symptoms have abated. <strong>The</strong> strength <strong>and</strong><br />

appetite will now gradually improve, but much caution<br />

must be exercised <strong>in</strong> not allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> animal to take too<br />

much food, which might have <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>duc<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

return <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> malady. Green food, or, if that cannot be<br />

had, bran mashes <strong>and</strong> oatmeal gruel, <strong>and</strong> a little sweet<br />

hay should compose its food, but to restore strength<br />

where much exhaustion prevails, tonic medic<strong>in</strong>e should be<br />

given. <strong>The</strong> mildest should be first adm<strong>in</strong>istered, <strong>and</strong> this<br />
