with moderate quickness it feels pa<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> looks back wist-<br />

fully at its flanks, as suppression <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ur<strong>in</strong>ary organs takes place <strong>and</strong> is followed by a difficulty<br />

<strong>in</strong> void<strong>in</strong>g ur<strong>in</strong>e, which comes <strong>of</strong>f <strong>in</strong> small quantities <strong>and</strong><br />

is generally high-coloured, <strong>and</strong> not unfrequently mixed<br />

with blood. Strong efforts are made by <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> to<br />

void it <strong>in</strong> larger quantities, but at length it is almost<br />

entirely suspended. Hence it will be manifest that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is an affection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ur<strong>in</strong>ary organs, but at first<br />

it will be difficult to say whe<strong>the</strong>r it is <strong>the</strong> kidney or <strong>the</strong><br />

neck <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bladder. At this stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease, ac-<br />

cord<strong>in</strong>g to Brown, <strong>the</strong> pulse is hard <strong>and</strong> accelerated ; it<br />

soon after becomes small, although reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g its cha-<br />

racter <strong>of</strong> hardness. In order to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

disease, <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> must be forced up <strong>the</strong> rectum, <strong>and</strong> if<br />

<strong>the</strong> bladder (which is situate under <strong>the</strong> rectum) feels<br />

distended <strong>and</strong> hard, <strong>the</strong>n it is certa<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong> disease<br />

is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neck <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bladder. If, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>,<br />

it is s<strong>of</strong>t <strong>and</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g empty, with heat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>es<br />

over it, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bladder itself<br />

but if <strong>the</strong>re is no unnatural heat over it, <strong>the</strong>n you may<br />

<strong>in</strong>fer that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> kidne} T<br />
