sore, <strong>and</strong> when once a colt Las a sore mouth it is sure to<br />

become hard-mou<strong>the</strong>d. When you have' accomplished<br />

bitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> colt, you next prepare a caversoon<br />

<strong>and</strong> loung<strong>in</strong>g re<strong>in</strong>. Make sure it will fit <strong>the</strong> colt without<br />

hurt<strong>in</strong>g it, as this is a powerful apparatus <strong>in</strong>tended to<br />

conf<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> nose. This should be used very gently, as<br />

<strong>in</strong>stances have been known <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bones <strong>and</strong> gristle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nose becom<strong>in</strong>g diseased irom harshly pull<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> caversoon.<br />

It must now be led round a r<strong>in</strong>g oq s<strong>of</strong>t ground, <strong>and</strong><br />

taught to walk <strong>and</strong> trot both ways <strong>and</strong> round also. Caress<br />

it whenever it does right, <strong>and</strong> do not let it run round <strong>the</strong><br />

circle too long, as it produces gidd<strong>in</strong>ess. We next use it<br />

to <strong>the</strong> roller, <strong>and</strong> afterwards to <strong>the</strong> dumb jockey. Thanks<br />

to Mr. Black well, <strong>the</strong> old clumsy wooden jockey has<br />

become a th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past, <strong>and</strong> his whalebone <strong>and</strong> gutta-<br />

percha jockey, with <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>diarubber re<strong>in</strong>s, have done<br />

away with <strong>the</strong> cruel unyield<strong>in</strong>g side re<strong>in</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se jockeys<br />

are admirably adapted to teach <strong>the</strong> colt to bend its head,<br />

<strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> same time to <strong>in</strong>sure <strong>the</strong> colt hav<strong>in</strong>g a light<br />

even mouth. When <strong>the</strong> colt has become tractable to all<br />

its lessons, loose straps may be hung upon <strong>the</strong> jockey to<br />

accustom it to <strong>the</strong> flapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> various parts <strong>of</strong> its harness,<br />

<strong>and</strong> prevent it becom<strong>in</strong>g restive. A few days will suffice<br />

to teach it all it is required, <strong>and</strong> make it endure it<br />

patiently, for as it f<strong>in</strong>ds that it is not hurt by <strong>the</strong>m, it<br />

soon becomes reconciled to <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> more gentle <strong>and</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>d we are <strong>the</strong> less trouble <strong>the</strong>y give, for as <strong>the</strong>y ga<strong>in</strong><br />

confidence <strong>in</strong> us <strong>the</strong> more <strong>the</strong>y will let us do to <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

Powell, <strong>in</strong> his work, published <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this<br />

century, gives us <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g as his system <strong>of</strong> approach-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g a colt. I record it here, as it may be useful to those<br />
