In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 115<br />

or it may come on suddenly. When it comes on sud-<br />

denly it is attended with great suffer<strong>in</strong>g. Occasionally<br />

we have suppuration <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fissure, slough<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lam<strong>in</strong>ae, caries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bone, superfluous granulation, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> very severe cases <strong>the</strong> animal gives up, refuses all food,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ks, <strong>and</strong> dies. Mr. Greaves, <strong>in</strong> a letter <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Veter<strong>in</strong>arian,<br />

vol. 48, p. 72, says, " I fully believe that <strong>in</strong> many<br />

cases <strong>the</strong>re is a constitutional tendency to s<strong>and</strong>crack, for<br />

if we get <strong>the</strong> fissure to grow out <strong>and</strong> entirely disappear<br />

<strong>in</strong> one place ano<strong>the</strong>r crack will make its appearance <strong>in</strong><br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>of</strong>. We <strong>of</strong>ten notice that <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong><br />

with a s<strong>and</strong>crack <strong>in</strong> one foot, whe<strong>the</strong>r it be h<strong>in</strong>d or fore,<br />

will sooner or later have ano<strong>the</strong>r s<strong>and</strong>crack <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r feet." <strong>The</strong> author cannot fall <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> view <strong>of</strong> Mr.<br />

Greaves upon <strong>the</strong> constitutional po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease,<br />

unless, <strong>in</strong>deed, <strong>the</strong> patient has an hereditary mal-<br />

formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, as some <strong>horse</strong>s have. Colts<br />

by Snowstorm, for <strong>in</strong>stance, have most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m one club<br />

foot. I am more <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> view taken by my<br />

friend Mr. Broad, <strong>of</strong> Bath. In a conversation I once had<br />

with him about this disease, he said, " <strong>The</strong> majority <strong>of</strong><br />

cases <strong>of</strong> s<strong>and</strong>crack that came under his notice for treat-<br />

ment were those that occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> toes <strong>of</strong> heavy cart<br />

<strong>horse</strong>s ; <strong>the</strong>y do not arise as <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> dryness or <strong>the</strong><br />

defects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horn itself, as, on <strong>the</strong> contrar}^, <strong>the</strong>y occur<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> strongest <strong>and</strong> thickest <strong>of</strong> ho<strong>of</strong>s which are de-<br />

fective <strong>in</strong> shape, be<strong>in</strong>g mostly very upright, so that<br />

when <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is shod with high caulk<strong>in</strong>gs—<strong>the</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipal cause—<strong>and</strong> put to excessively heavy pull<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>the</strong> front part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>of</strong> gets more stra<strong>in</strong> upon it than<br />

it can susta<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> result be<strong>in</strong>g a fracture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horn.
