jaws <strong>in</strong> bit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> manger, <strong>and</strong> when found <strong>the</strong> next<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g was try<strong>in</strong>g to seize <strong>the</strong> manger with <strong>the</strong> broken<br />

stumps <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jaw, all its top teeth be<strong>in</strong>g knocked out<br />

<strong>and</strong> its bottom jaw broken <strong>of</strong>f just below <strong>the</strong> tusk. <strong>The</strong><br />

animal was <strong>of</strong> course <strong>in</strong>stantly shot.<br />

TETANUS OR LOCK-JAW.<br />

This disease to human be<strong>in</strong>gs as well as to <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong><br />

generally proves fatal, yet as <strong>the</strong> writer has been success-<br />

ful <strong>in</strong> two cases, <strong>the</strong> mode <strong>of</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> adopted will not<br />

be out <strong>of</strong> place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se pages. This disease does not<br />

manifest itself <strong>of</strong> a sudden, but generally steals over <strong>the</strong><br />

system by slow <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>sidious means. It first develops<br />

itself by <strong>the</strong> animal appear<strong>in</strong>g heavy, dull, <strong>and</strong> unwell<br />

for a day or two. It feeds spar<strong>in</strong>gly, frequently half<br />

chew<strong>in</strong>g its food, <strong>the</strong>n lett<strong>in</strong>g it drop from its mouth.<br />

When it dr<strong>in</strong>ks, <strong>the</strong> water is gulped <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ary mode <strong>of</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g it. <strong>The</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jaw be-<br />

comes extremely imperfect, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> saliva trickles from<br />

<strong>the</strong> sides <strong>of</strong> its mouth. <strong>The</strong> mouth at length can be but<br />

imperfectly opened, <strong>and</strong> ultimately <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

voluntary muscles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neck <strong>and</strong> upper portions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

shoulders become immovably fixed. After this <strong>the</strong>re is
